Jesus, the Minister of Salvation

Young Jesus:

There is not much written concerning Jesus as a young boy. What I have attempted to do is examine particular Greek word in the few verses that speak of our Lord’s youth. The Greek words may give us a clearer insight to what has been revealed. I will give you the information, and you may draw your own conclusions.

Jesus at the age of 30, came forth publicly as a prophet, this was His introduction to the public. Before this age, the law did not permit a man to enter into the public ministry.

2. Luke 2:40, “And the child GREW, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him.”

A. “Grew:” Jesus grew in his body, being in perfect health. He was endowed in His reasoning, agreeable and opposed to the absurd; also to “grow,”

B. “Grow.” To receive increase, to grow, to grow up, here it is in the Active form. The above words are used in Scriptures in the following way,

a. Matt.6:28, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they GROW.”

b. Mark 4:8, “And other (seed) fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and INCREASED.”

c. Luke 13:19, “It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it GREW, and waxed a great tree.”

There is not much written concerning Jesus as a young boy. Luke 2:40, “And the child GREW, and waxed strong in spirit, was filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him.”

Waxed in the Greek, Passive, expressing action, or the effect of an action of some agent. To be strong, to grow strong in His rational mind, His soul, his thoughts were for the things of His Father in heaven.

“He was filled with wisdom.”

Metonymically or putting one work for another, Jesus as the author and source of this wisdom. He joined as one with wisdom.

1 Cor.1:30, “But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” Christ was as one, joined in the same office with wisdom, purity of heart and life.

The Wisdom said of Christ is used in the N.T. in the following ways,

1. James 1:5, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

2. James 3:13, “Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? Let him show out of a good conversation (conduct) his works with meekness of wisdom.”

3. James 3:17, “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.”

“And the grace of God (the Father) was upon Him.” Grace as in disposition, feeling towards any one, as in favor, kindness, good-will, benevolence. The grace of God found in Christ is used in the following ways,

Ex.33:12, The LORD said to Moses, “I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.”

Acts 4:33, “With great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and great grace was upon them all.”

Acts 7:10, Speaking of Joseph in Egypt, God, “Delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor (grace) and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh.”

3. Luke 2:42, “When He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.”

At the age of 12, every Jewish boy was styled, “a son of the law,” and was obliged to appear before the LORD at the three public festivals.

1.        The feast of unleavened bread,
2. The feast of weeks,
3. And the feast of tabernacles.”

One can only imagine the thoughts of our Lord at this period of His life. We know He loved the people and the house of God. Ps.26:8, “LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honor dwells.”

At His first visit into the city and temple area, if we had been with Him we may have heard Him pray the Father,

1. Ps:42:1, “As the hart (deer) panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

2. Ps.87:2, “The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.”

3. Ps.122:1, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the LORD.”

We hear no words from Him during the eight days of the feast, but we can imagine the thoughts of His young heart as He saw the great city lay before Him.

1. Ps.48:2, “Beautiful for situation (in elevation) the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.”

2. Ps.50:2, “Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.”

Also, at the age to twelve, all male children were to begin to learn a trade.

4. Luke 2:46-47, “After three days they (Jesus parents) found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. All that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.”

Mary and Joseph find their young son in the temple, not in the sanctuary. The sanctuary was for the priests of the temple only. But in some of the areas around the sanctuary one could find the rabbi’s, or doctors with their students.

The students would hear, and then ask questions. This method of teaching was the customary form used. Both the teachers and students took their turns, doing both. This would answer to, “All that heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers.”

This was the first time Jesus found himself in His Fathers house. The great beauty of Jesus life was; that He had no desire to anticipate, or to take over the duties of others.

Jesus did not become a teacher at this time? No! He was to be a learner. Why?
1. His time was not yet.
2. He had yet to increase in wisdom, ver.52, “Jesus (was yet to) increased in wisdom.”

Luke 2:48-49, Mary asked, “Son, why have you thus dealt with us? behold, your father (Joseph) and I have sought thee sorrowing (anxiously.)”

Their question was answered with His question. This question asked by His mother was the first of many frivolous questions of inquiry with which the Jewish rulers and people would pile upon Him.

5. Luke 2:49, He replied to them, “How is it that ye sought me: wist (knew) you not that I must be about my Father’s business?”

This literally may read, “In, or at my Fathers, or about my Father’s affairs, or in my father’s court. This is where my father dwells and can be found. Jesus took this opportunity to instruct His parents concerning His Divine nature and mission, as in His Fathers concerns or business.

Jesus reply seems simple, yet in ver.50, we read, “They understood not the saying which He spake unto them.”

The power of His words to His parents was an assertion of His Higher Sonship. Also, this is the last time we hear of Joseph. The next mention is of Jesus mother, and brethren, John 2:12. So we can conclude that from this time in the temple to John 2:12, Joseph must have died.

6. Luke 2:52, “Jesus INCREASED in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

“Increased in wisdom.” Greek means, to make progress in any thing, to advance, to increase; as common dative, which is a term applied to the case of nouns which usually follows verbs that express giving, or some act directed to an object. So dative, of that in or as to, wisdom and stature.

“Favor with God and man.” Favor here is the same Greek as the word “Grace” seen above.

Jesus made progress, advanced and increased in the things of God and men.

Jesus knew no sin, and grew in favor with His Father. Concerning His human nature, He increased in the graces of the Holy Spirit. This can be applied to us also. We are not perfect as Jesus was, but in our Christian growth, we can grow in favor with our Father in heaven, and in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. For Jesus was our example of spiritual growth.

Who Jesus is:

The only foundation I will use for this discussion is the uncorrupted word of God, the Bible. When it comes to pure doctrine my only source will be the Scriptures. For word interpretation, I will use both the Greek and Hebrew Dictionaries. I try to build bridges when discussing these very serious subjects.

I will quote from the King James Bible; and will use Scriptural evidence only. Also, I adhere to no specific denominational teachings and will use Scriptural evidence only. I believe in a strict chain of command; God the Father who rules from heaven; the Son of God who has been given all power and authority over the creation by the Father. We then complete the Triune godhead with the Holy Spirit who was sent by both the Father and Son. This chain of command shall never be broken.

Is Jesus God, God meaning, is He the Creator, the Almighty? Let’s begin with Isa.9:6, “For unto us a child = (Jesus) is born, unto us a Son is given, — and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father.”

Because Isaiah was a Jew, he worshipped one God. If he meant the Son was another God; and not the one who said he was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, he would have been guilty of blaspheme under Jewish law. He would then have been taken outside the city and stoned to death. What he wrote is exactly what he meant, and the words given him were by the Holy Spirit.

The child to be born was Jesus the Christ, 1 Tim. 3:16, and that child was, “God manifest in the flesh.”

Matt.1:23, “They shall call his (Jesus) name Immanuel, interpreted is, “God with us.”

The nouns, “God, Everlasting, and Father,” in Isa.9, dominate the sentence, the adjective “mighty,” describes the noun God. Therefore, if Jesus is called the mighty God, or the All-mighty God, or God, He is the one true God Isaiah spoke of. The word God here is the Hebrew “El.” The word Father in Isaiah 9:6 is Ab, or Abba, therefore another of Jesus titles is, he is our Everlasting Father.

Compare with Matt.23:9, Jesus said, “Call no man your father upon the earth: for ONE is your Father, which is in heaven.” Jesus has ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.

Was Isaiah confused as to whom the Father was, or to whom God was, of course not! Note the upper case “God,” and the definite article “the,” used with both “the mighty God, and “The everlasting Father. This upper case and definite article point directly to the one and only God and Father of us all.

Compare the following Gen.1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven the earth,” with,

Col.1:16, “For by Him = (Jesus) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth — all things were created by Him and for him,” also,

Heb.1:10, where the Father said of His Son, “Thou, LORD = (meaning Jesus,) in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands.”

John 1:10, “He = (Jesus) was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.” 1 John 1:2, “For the life (Jesus) was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us.”

Rev.1:9, Jesus said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, — which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.”

Jesus is the God of the creation, because in its purest interpretation, He is the Creator. John 1, refers to Jesus as, the LIGHT of the world, which is the LIFE of the world. Compare Gen.2:7, “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” He gave Adam life then, and he gives life to every child born to a woman.

Heb.13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” I will add more latter.

John 1:1, In the beginning was the Word = (Jesus,) and the Word = (Jesus) was with God = (the Father) and the Word was God.” Take note of the definite article “the.” In the Greek, when you have one, two or more nouns, in this case, Word, and God, and one definite article, “the,” both nouns pick up the definite article. It would then read, “the Word was the God.” This is correct, see Granville Sharpe’s work on the definite article. Also check my dictionary on the definite article.

In Rev.1, we read, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God (the Father) gave unto Him.” The definite article “The,” tells us that this is a one and only Revelation given by the Father concerning His Beloved Son. There will be no further Revelations concerning Jesus Christ coming from the Father. In ver.8, Jesus said, “I (Jesus) am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, –which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” Therefore, Jesus is both the Mighty God of Isaiah 9, and the All-mighty of Revelation 1.

Heb.13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday and to day, and for ever.” He is God, He is our Creator, He is Supreme over the creation. Jesus is, Heb.12:2, “The author (originator) and finisher (perfecter) of our faith.”

This authorship began in Gen.3:15, when Jehovah said to the serpent, “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Isa.48:16. If you read the whole of chapter 48, you will see that it is Jehovah speaking in ver.16. Isa.48:16, He said, “Come you near unto me (Jehovah,) hear you this; I (Jehovah) have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord God (the Father,) and His Spirit (Holy Spirit,) has sent me.” Don’t accept the nonsense that Isaiah was speaking of himself.

Heb.1:3, It is said of Jesus, He, “He being the brightness of His (the Father’s) glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power —.”

The Greek word “express” means, the counterpart of the Father’s essence or being. Only God the Son can be in the brightness of the Father’s glory. Who can be like God the Father? It can only be God the Son, for He is the only begotten of the Father.

Isa.45:23, God said, “I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that unto me (Jehovah) every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.”

Now compare this to Phil.2:10, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

John 20:28, Thomas, one of the apostles, had doubts as to the person who stood before him. He did not believe that the Jesus had been raised from the dead. Thomas needed physical proof. The Lord told Thomas to, reach here your finger, and behold my hands; and reach here your hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

Thomas replied, “My Lord and my God.” Thomas was the first to give the title of God to Jesus in the N.T. From this point forward, the disciples treated Jesus with the most supreme respect.

There is so much more concerning this subject, but space and time are limited. I sincerely hope this helps to clarify a most difficult subject, a subject which has divided the body of Christ. We must by faith believe that which has been set down before us. If a person does not understand, set the subject aside, remain loyal to the whole of Scripture, and in God’s time all shall be revealed.

The idea of Jesus being the firstborn, does not mean that He was created, as some cults teach. The Greek and Hebrew words are applied to Jesus in the following way:

As a trope or metaphor. First-born, as the first, the chief, one highly distinguished and preeminent; So of Christ, as the beloved Son of God before the creation, Col.1:15, “The firstborn of every creature,” coll. with ver.16, “by Him were all things created.” Heb.1:6, “the first-begotten into the world,” He = (the Father) said, let all the angels of God worship Him,” collectivly with ver.5, The Father said, “this day have I begotten thee?”
