Names and Offices: Saviour

Names & Offices: Saviour:

Saviour: The Greek is, soter, and means, “deliverer, preserver, one who saves from danger or destruction; one who brings into a state of prosperity and happiness, the benefactor of a state. Concerning Jesus as the Messiah, He is the Savior of men, who saves His people from eternal death, punishment, and misery, as the consequence of sin, and gives them eternal life and happiness in his kingdom.

Isaiah 12:2, “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JE-HO-VAH is my strength and my song; He also is become my salvation.”

The LORD JEHOVAH is not only our Savior, by whom we are saved, but also our salvation. The repetition of His name in this verse bears witness to His unchangeable and eternal nature. The idea of salvation through God is associated with the feast of tabernacles.

We gain a full picture of this in Matt.21:9 and Ps. 118:25-26. “Hosanna” means “save now.”

Matthew 21:9, “And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Ho-san-na (save now) to the son to David =(Jesus): Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the LORD; Ho-san-na in the highest.”

Psalms 118:25-26, “Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD = (This is a prophesy concerning the coming of Christ): we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.”

An important symbolic act representing salvation could be seen in the way the Jews would bring water in a golden pitcher, from the fountain of Siloam, to the temple. The water was to be mixed with wine, and then poured on the sacrifice that had been placed upon the altar.

This pouring out of water indicated repentance, 1 Sam.7:6, “And they = (the Jews) gathered together to Mizpeh,= (a place in Israel) and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD.”

Likewise salvation was accomplished by the pouring out of Jesus blood,

Hebrews 9:28, “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

Revelation 21:3, “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God, =(Jesus) is with men, and he will dwell with them.”

The apostle Peter, when on the Mount of Transfiguration said to the Lord, “Let us make three tabernacles; one for thee.” This transfiguration of the Lord was a pledge of a future kingdom.

Psalms 118:15, “The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles =(tents) of the righteous,”

Zechariah 14:16, “And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, (Jesus) the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.”

Old Testament prophets continually reminded the Jewish people of their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. The feast of tabernacles is to remind future generations of those who had fled Egypt with Moses, and lived in tents for 40 years.

Psalms 107:7, “And He = (God) led them forth by the right way, that they = (the Jews) might go to a city of habitation.”

Jesus is both our salvation, and our Savior!

Isaiah 45:21 says, “A just God and a Savior.” As God is just, He is also true in the keeping His promises. As a result of His righteousness, and justice, He shall save His redeemed.

Isiah 42:6-21, “I the LORD have called thee in righteousness = (a righteous purpose), and will hold thine hand = (Messiah), and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles.”

Isaiah 42:21, “The LORD = (The Father) is well pleased for His =(Jesus) righteousness’ sake”

Isaiah 42:1, “Behold my = (the Father) servant = (the Son), whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth.”

Matthew 3:15, “Who fulfills all righteousness that He = (Jesus) will magnify the law, and make it honorable.” Therefore the new covenant is born in Christ Jesus.

Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”

Savior, in the Septuagint, means, to cause to escape, to confide in, and to hope. It does not say, “One who is to be a Savior,” but, “One who is born = (was, is, and will always be) a Savior, unto you.”

Isaiah 9:6, A “child is born.” It is a birth.

John 1:14, “The Word was made flesh,” when, “This day!” Where, “In the city of David!” This is where and when, the Old Testament prophets told us to look for the Messiah.

In Luke 2:11, “Christ the Lord.” This is the only place in Scripture, where the words Christ, and Lord come together. The title “Christ” points out the Savior. This is Jehovah Himself, come in the flesh.

1 Timothy 3:16, “God was manifest in the flesh.” K.J.V.

There is no other way to understand this title, “Lord,” as meaning any one other than Jehovah, our Creator. The Lordship of Christ must be considered as spiritual. Jesus never set up any secular government on earth, nor did He command any government to be established in His name. Also, there is no other spiritual government but that of Jesus.

Isiah 9:6, “And the government shall be upon His = (Jesus) shoulders.”

The idea of Savior = (King, Priest, Prophet) in the above, points to Jesus as fulfilling all three. As Prophet; The will of the Father is revealed, for the instructing men; as High Priest, to offer up a sacrifice, this as a sacrifice for the sins of man. As Lord, to rule over the body of believers.

Acts 5:31 reads, “Him = (Jesus) hath God = (the Father) exalted with His right hand to be a Prince and a Savior.”

Prince and Savior, express the Royalty and Majesty of the coming of Messiah, to which all Israel looked. Each office, Christ the Prince and Savior enters into the other, and both make one, wonderful, glorious whole.

Jesus alone will deliver man from the danger of eternal hell. As we continue to walk in the Light, He keeps us from stumbling, and the snares, dangers that we are exposed to daily. It is only by Him, in Him, and in connection with His Holy Spirit, that we are preserved blameless.

Psalms 85:10-11, “Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.” Our Father’s promise of mercy will be verified by His truth.

Psalms 25:10, “All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.”

Acts 13:23, “Of this man’s seed = (David) hath God = (the Father) according to his promise raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus.” Jesus has come from that indisputable line of David through His mother Mary, according to both promise and prophecy.

Matthew 1:1, “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David,”

Concerning the word generation, the emphasis is in the idea of a “seed.” Christ sprang from this promised seed, this being foretold, and fulfilled. On the character in which this promised Christ was given by the Father, “a Savior” is given.

This proper name is added and designed to express the very character of his person.

Matthew 1:21, Joseph had not known his wife Mary intimately, “Till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.”

Philippians 3:20, “For our conversation = (citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” The church waits for the Lord Jesus to return.

Hebrews 10:28, “And unto them that look = (eagerly wait) for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

Our High Priest has ascended to His Father’s throne, a place not made with hands, and his name has been exalted above every name. We are the church of the first-born, this being the spirits of just men, made perfect, in Christ, our Savior.

2 Peter 1:1-11, “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle, of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like = (the same kind of) precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ … For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

Peter was commissioned by Jesus Himself, yet he puts himself at a level with all other believers. The degree of faith varies in all believers. The Gospel plan sets forth the Father’s plan of righteousness, which is Christ’s righteousness. Faith has in it, its’ circuit of action, knowledge, and influence, as its’ appropriate cause which produces action.

Jesus is in redemption, “Righteousness” and at the same time, “Savior.”

Isaiah 45:21, The LORD said, “There is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me.”

Any Christian who ministers diligently, and stands, God will give him an honorable and triumphal entrance into heaven.

2 Peter 2:20, “For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.”

This speaks of those who have escaped worldly entanglements, but again return to their old ways, becoming entangled again.

Hebrews 6:4-6, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh = (again) and put him to an open shame.”

It becomes impossible for them to ever again come into true repentance.

It is only through the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, that we escape the destructive influence of the world. Salvation is by Christ alone, so therefore,

1 John 2:27, “Ye need not that any man teach you.” Salvation is not by, or through the teachings of men.

We do not need modern day Pharisees, Sadducees, or to enlighten us. We have the Holy Spirit to teacher and guide us, for His is the truth.

Jeremiah 31:34, “And they =(false teachers) shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD:”

John 6:45, “It is written in the prophets, and they = (the church) shall be all taught of God.”

John 16:13, “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you = (believers) into all truth.

Psalms 40:10, “I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy loving kindness and thy truth from the great congregation.”

Isaiah 32:17, “So the work of righteousness, in His = (Jesus) government, shall be peace.”

Romans 3:26, “To declare, I say, at this time His = (Jesus) righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”

Can anyone imagine the depth of the love both the Father and Son have for us, in that they are just, in justifying the guilty. The Son of God became the sacrifice! This to remove the obstacle = (sin) which prevented us = (man) from spending eternity with God. Justice has full satisfaction.

2 Timothy 1:10, “But is now made manifested by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

Jesus has destroyed the power of death and hell. Through His death, and resurrection, we shall live forever. By Him alone comes the resurrection of our bodies, and through Him, eternal life and glory.

2 Peter 3: 2-18, “That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. A-men’.”

The holy prophets are possibly a reference to the apostles who live among you in present times, this in contrast to the Old Testament prophets.

Jude 14-15, “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints. To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him = (Christ).”

Psalms 1:1, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

Daniel 12:2, “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.” The Church, consisting of both Jew and Gentile, should remember with thanksgiving, the many ways by which God will bring them to this heavenly “city of Habitation,”

Jude 25, “To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. A-men’.” He alone teaches, and declares the truth. This is our Savior, Jesus Christ.
